Construir una genealogía del pensamiento fe-
minista y, en concreto de la traducción, es un
paso necesario para cartografiar el estado de
nuestro campo, descubrir las ausencias que lo
aquejan, las voces que han quedado en sordina
y resituar aquellas que las han opacado. En el
volumen Translation, Semiotics, and Feminism,
el segundo de la colección “Key thinkers on
translation”, de Routledge, se compila, actualiza
y recontextualiza el pensamiento de la traductó-
loga, activista, traductora y pensadora feminista
canadiense Barbara Godard. Esta autora tuvo una
gran influencia en el desarrollo de la traducto-
logía de los años ochenta, fundamentalmente en
la que surgió de la escuela canadiense. Si bien
su temprana muerte en 2010 truncó una vía de
acción teórica y práctica, gracias a este volumen
editado por Eva C. Karpinski y Elena Basile, po-
demos abordarla de manera panorámica y situa-
da con las coordenadas del presente.
¿Por qué recuperar hoy el pensamiento godar-
diano? En primer lugar, porque su enfoque como
académica y traductora entronca con el actual
giro hacia otras disciplinas que está viviendo
la traductología (Bassnett & Johnston, 2019).
Godard, en su praxis y en su desarrollo teórico,
bebe de la literatura comparada, la filosofía, el
pensamiento poscolonial y decolonial, así como
del feminismo de la diferencia, e incluso en mu-
chas ocasiones sus fuentes se alejan del canon

posestructuralista y abogan por referencias más
periferizadas o menos reconocidas (Castella-
no Ortolá, 2021, p. 40). Su producción teórica
y sus obras traducidas no solo son aportaciones
valiosísimas a nuestro campo, sino un espacio
de pensamiento de primer orden para todas las
disciplinas humanísticas y, en especial, para los
estudios de género. En su carrera, no pueden
separarse sus trabajos teóricos de su práctica
traductora, pues, como ella misma afirmaba en
el texto “The translator as subject”, “translating,
like writing, is research” (Karpinski y Basile,
2021, p. 254).
En un cuidadoso trabajo de recopilación y
contextualización de los textos más destacados
de la pensadora, así como de edición a partir
de los materiales disponibles en archivos, las
editoras plantean su proyecto como un gesto
reparador y propositivo (p. xv). Por un lado,
pretenden volver a tejer la urdimbre quebrada
de la temporalidad de los estudios feministas de
la traducción y devolverle a Godard el lugar
que debe ocupar en dicha genealogía. Por otro,
propenden por que este conjunto de textos sirva
para seguir pensando y debatiendo acerca de los
temas que abordó la traductóloga canadiense, así
como aquellos que se nos plantean hoy y pueden
beber de sus reflexiones.
El libro sigue la lógica godardiana, que entiende
el acercamiento a la traducción a partir de
cuatro perspectivas: la teórica, la ético-política,
la institucional y la pragmática. Así, tras
una clarificadora introducción que enmarca
el volumen y el pensamiento de Godard, se
presentan sus textos más destacados —catorce
ya publicados y dos inéditos; los dieciséis
reunidos por primera vez en un solo volumen—
en cuatro bloques: el primero, centrado en la
teoría de la traducción feminista y la producción
cultural, quizá la aportación más conocida de
Godard; el segundo, en las figuras de la traducción
como campos relacionales que constituyen,
de manera dinámica, vínculos «secundarios»
y de desterritorialización con respecto a las
producciones culturales de zonas de contacto,
fundamentalmente, en América del Norte, del Sur
y Europa; en tercer lugar, los aspectos semióticos
y de corte ético de la traducción, y, en cuarto y
último lugar, las propias prácticas traductoras
de Godard, apartado en el que se hace especial
hincapié en la vertiente afectiva y encarnada de
su labor.
Uno de los grandes méritos del volumen es
cómo este consigue poner en primer plano la
afinidad del pensamiento/praxis godardiana
con el pensamiento feminista como marco
epistemológico de primer orden y no como
discurso subordinado. Es habitual encontrarnos
reflexiones acerca de la traducción desde los
estudios de género o desde la propia filosofía
que no tienen en cuenta los desarrollos teóricos
de nuestra disciplina, subordinándola no solo
como práctica, sino también como campo de
construcción teórica —véase, por ejemplo, la
aproximación de Butler (2019)—. Sin embargo,
en este libro vemos de manera patente que
la empresa godardiana trasciende la práctica
traductora y pone en marcha una
critical interrogation and rejection of universal
standards of truth and value; their common
challenge of traditional gender construc-
tion and hierarchical gender roles and their
shared focus on re-making language and dis-
course as historically marked by oppressive
systems of hetero(sexism), racism, and colo-
nialism (Karpinski y Basile, 2021, p. 2).
Esta recuperación contextualizada y temática
de su obra, antes dispersa y en parte inédita —o
solo accesible en francés—, revaloriza también
géneros periféricos en un ecosistema de pro-
ducción científica —e insisto en el término
producción— donde parece que el género del ar-
tículo académico sea el único espacio válido de
enunciación del pensamiento. Por tanto, el valor
de este rescate genealógico trasciende el conte-
nido que presenta y nos ayuda no solo a avanzar
en el campo de los estudios feministas de la tra-
ducción, sino también a replantear las dinámicas
imperantes en la academia contemporánea y los
espacios privilegiados de enunciación del saber y
el conocimiento, que, por su casuística, seguirán
perpetuando discriminaciones y sesgos arraiga-
dos en nuestros sistemas.

Como bien defiende la propia Godard en muchos
de los textos presentes en este volumen, la tra-
ducción es una transposición creativa, una rees-
critura, una transformación (p. 142), un marco
en el que la traductora deviene cocreadora del
texto. Esto, indudablemente, conlleva toda una
serie de desafíos éticos —véase, a este respecto,
en especial la tercera parte— que resultan más
actuales que nunca con la emergencia de nuevos
retos para el pensamiento y la práctica traductora,
como puedan ser la traducción automática, la tra-
ducción de lenguas híbridas y mestizas, o el papel
de la traducción como dimensión performativa.
De ahí también la actualidad de sus reflexiones
para pensar lo que está sucediendo ahora en los
ecosistemas de la traducción y de aquellos que se
sirven de esta como concepto viajero (Bal, 2002).
A su vez, es digna de mención la apuesta de las
editoras por incluir aquellos textos en los que la
pensadora aborda la traducción desde una subje-
tividad más marcada; los más cercanos a su prác-
tica como traductora, aquellos que se sitúan en el
espacio de los paratextos. Lo paratextual, como
bien han apuntado recientemente Villanueva-Jor-
dán y Martínez-Carrasco (2021) es un campo de
agencia para quien traduce y una herramienta
para producir y diseminar teoría. En este caso,
Godard aprovecha esas brechas que ella misma
le abre a la obra para sus desarrollos teóricos. La
obra deja de ser un ente monolítico y fundado en
un centro único como fuente de autoridad; como
decía Derrida, que se valía de un gesto similar,
con sus textos «lo primero que se cuestiona es
la unidad del “libro” considerada como una bo-
nita totalidad» (Derrida, 2014, p. 17). En el caso
de la pensadora canadiense, la paratextualidad
sirve para interactuar con el texto y plantear “her
feminist ‘interdiscursive’ and ‘interanimating’
theories of translation” (p. 226).
Así, en la cuarta parte del libro, se recopila el
texto de una conferencia, dos prólogos como
traductora de obras francocanadienses y un texto
que funciona como bitácora de traducción, donde
Godard aborda los problemas que se encuentra al
trabajar cuerpo a cuerpo con un texto. Estos textos
sirven también para reivindicar sus enormes
aportaciones como traductora y equipararlas a
sus contribuciones teóricas. Como recuperaba al
inicio de este texto, para esta autora, investigar
y traducir eran términos intercambiables;
traducir era investigar, era pensar; investigar
era traducir. No podemos separar, por ende, la
Godard pensadora de la Godard traductora. En
esa intersección emerge también su labor más
activista, pues su papel como traductora de poetas
experimentales quebequesas feministas —sobre
todo de los años setenta y ochenta—, además de
los lugares en que se publicaron dichos textos
—revistas literarias independientes y radicales—,
nos sirve como ejemplo del papel activo que
tienen las traductoras en la reconfiguración de los
polisistemas literarios que habitan. Los afectos, lo
más personal, también se cuelan en las reflexiones
recogidas en esta cuarta parte del volumen sobre
las traducciones que ella aborda y remarcan el
papel político que tiene la dimensión más personal
a partir del feminismo de la segunda ola.
Translation, Semiotics, and Feminism. Selected
Writings of Barbara Godard no solo es una gran
aportación al campo de los estudios de traducción
por el fundamental trabajo genealógico que llevan
a cabo sus editoras, sino que además renueva
visiones teóricas, prácticas y metodológicas
de nuestra disciplina de la mano de una de las
teóricas más destacadas no solo de la traducción,
sino además de los estudios feministas. Es,
en conclusión, un volumen que trasciende
nuestro campo y permite que otras áreas de las
humanidades puedan acercarse a un pensamiento
de germen traductológico, pero que se abre al
afuera, que abraza el descentramiento de los
discursos encerrados en una sola disciplina y del
binarismo que aún gobierna la distribución de
saberes —y su enunciación— en el ecosistema
académico contemporáneo.
