Abstract. Why to study the public opinion? The study of the public opinion has to do with the collective conduct, the social movements, the vital impulses in the individuals and the groups, the feelings, prejudices, emotions, traditions, etc., and, generally, as much with the individual behavior as collective. The public opinion, that "monster" that has burst in into the modern civilization that appear sometimes like foundation of the democracy and into others like coalesce of social forces that originate dictatorships. It is a phenomenon that is not exclusive of the industrial society; nevertheless, he is undeniable that acquires in her all their meaning.

Resumen. ¿Para qué estudiar la opinión pública? El estudio de la opinión pública tiene que ver con la conducta colectiva, los movimientos sociales, los impulsos vitales en los individuos y los grupos, los sentimientos, prejuicios, emociones, tradiciones, etc., y, en general, tanto con el comportamiento individual como colectivo. La opinión pública, ese "monstruo" que ha irrumpido en la civilización moderna que aparece algunas veces como fundamento de la democracia y en otras como aglutinador de fuerzas sociales que originan dictaduras. Es un fenómeno que no es exclusivo de la sociedad industrial; sin embargo, es innegable que adquiere en ella toda su significación
