Abstract

Impregnation of nitrogen compounds is one of the most widely used techniques for modifying basic groups in adsorbent materials, generating increased of CO2 adsorption capacity. In this paper we study the impregnation process of nitrogen compounds on silica powders. The mesoporous silica powders were synthesized by sol-gel method, using sodium silicate as silica source, and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the structure directing agent. The silica powders were prepared by excess wet impregnation with two nitrogen compounds, hydroxypyridine and urea. The surface area and pore size distribution was determined by physisorption of N2 (-176ºC) obtaining surface area of the samples between 340-600 m2/g, pore volume between 0,20–0,80 cm3/g and pore diameter between 6-10nm. The morphology was analized by SEM and structural properties were studied by FTIR and DRX.Surface modification of the mesoporous silica with urea and hydroxypyridine allows increased CO2 adsorption capacity compared to mesoporous silica powders unimpregnated.
