Abstract

This research was conducted in the University of Sucre’s Red Gate citadel, municipality of Sincelejo, Sucre department (Colombia). The overall objective was to evaluate the effects of different doses of ammonium nitrate in the liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index, consistency and fluency of a montmorillonitic clay soil. The methodology included the profile description and disturbed sampling design. It was ordered by a completely randomized experimental laboratory with continuous variables, indices limits and factors which different doses of ammonium nitrate applied and their reaction time with the ground; was used 4 levels for the first factor, and 3 level for second factor, three repetitions for each. The results showed that the liquid limit and the consistence index decreased and the average plastic limit increased with the increasing doses of nitrate, and its contact time, whereas plasticity indices and fluidity had a contrary behavior. Clay activity decreased when the dose of nitrate and contact time was increased. Statistical analysis showed that there are significant differences, for a confidence level of 95%, between the liquid and plastic limits averages given contact time, and another. The multiple range contrast test indicated differences between 0 and 60 days, and 30 and 60 days of contact.
