Abstract

This work studies the effect of photo-oxidation on bitumen ageing. Bitumen is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, and heteroatoms within heavy metals. The organic compounds are affected by environmental conditions, undergoing degradation, which results in a reduction of properties. The effect of environmental conditions in bitumen had been studied for years, finding that the main mechanisms that deteriorate their properties are: thermo-oxidation, photo-oxidation and volatilization; the oxygen action, temperature, solar radiation and time being the reasons behind this damage. However, although those mechanisms are recognized, the specific photo-degradation mechanism is not well known yet. In this work, Colombian bitumen samples were exposed in a chamber with xenon light during different time periods in order to evaluate the chemical changes by infrared spectroscopy by Fourier transformer (FTIR) and microestructural characteristics by topographic analysis using atomic force microscopy (AFM) finding a relation between
exposure time and chemical and microestructural changes on the material.
