Abstract

Within direct reduction processes using iron ore fines, the fluidized bed is ranked with a promising future. The FINMET (old FIOR) process, existing in Venezuela, is the only industrial fluidized bed process that is currently in operation. The CIRCORED process offers high expectations. In the direct reduction processes using a fluidized bed mainly two types of problems usually occur: STICKING or agglomeration of iron ore particles and the PLATING or crusting iron sponge on the walls and floor of the reactor. This paper shows an analysis of the status of direct reduction processes using gas as a reducing agent; also, it describes the causes of the above problems and possible measures to reduce or eliminate them.
