Abstract

This work proposes as one of its objectives the reduction of PAM mining environmental liabilities through obtaining, at the laboratory level, glass foams. These foams are obtained from a mixture of glass powder, silicon carbide as a foaming agent and mining tailings stored outdoors that occur in areas near the municipality of Vetas, Santander. In this work, a detailed sampling of said mining tailings was carried out and then a chemical and mineralogical characterization was carried out using XRD, XRF and SEM, physics and granulometry. Subsequently, the tailings with high SiO2 content were mixed with recycled glass, which is traditionally the main raw material for the production of glass foams, said mixture was subjected to DSC and TGA tests to obtain the appropriate temperatures to carry out the sintering treatment. The temperatures used for sintering were 750, 950 and 1000 ° C, at a heating rate of 5 ° C / min and a holding time of 30 minutes in a muffle furnace, in an atmosphere in the presence of oxygen and allowing it to cool. Inside the oven. Obtaining a glass foam at 950 ° C with the following properties: apparent density 0.292 g / cm3, percentage of porosity 58% and compressive strength of 8.96 MPa. Finally, the possibility of obtaining foam glass at a low cost, using mining tailings, was demonstrated.
