El Banco Nacional, 1880-1904: el fracaso de la moneda legal

El presidente Rafael Núñez conocía la necesidad de consolidar un banco estatal con poder de emisión, que le permitiera controlar la liquidez del sistema monetario. El Banco Nacional tuvo ese propósito. Sin embargo, si bien el papel moneda independizó al estado de la clase financiera privada, condujo a aumentar excesivamente la oferta monetaria y generó tendencias inflacionarias. En fin, el Estado colombiano fracasó en su intento por implantar un sistema monetario homogéneo a fines del siglo XIX.
