Abstract

The depletion of coal deposits with low sulfur coal region of Coahuila (Mexico) operated since 1884, represents a technological challenge to further harness this resource in metallurgical processes and power generation, under environmental compliance standards. A viable alternative to remove the sulfur in coal is the bio-desulfurization using bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and native species. The first stage of this research consists on characterize coal in order to determine the concentrations and types of sulfur content. Characterized coals belong to the sub-basins of Sabinas: Sabinas, Saltillo-Lampacitos. The characterization includes proximate analysis and petrographic. Preparation techniques were adapted and observation of samples was made to determine the dispersion, geometric shape and sulphurous particle concentration. The total sulfur was determined by Leco brand analyzer model S-632 following the ASTM D 4239-97 method "C" and the ASTM D 3177-89. The inorganic sulfur found as sulfides and sulfates ad the inorganic sulfur pyrite that is present in greater proportion, were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The rank of the coals analyzed was obtained by petrographic analysis, we analyzed the vitrinite reflectance and maceral counts in a polarized light microscope LEICA DM4500 P.
