Abstract

The torsional performance evaluation of a polymer adhesive joint designed for the assembly of a "Type T" joint, located on the rear axle of the chassis of a single cycle, is presented. The relative torsional displacement of the axle over the junction was measured when the single cycle was mobilized downhill, by a short track, with an average inclination of 14° and with linear velocity changes of 3 m/s, 5 m/s and 4.3 m/s, for different sections, subjecting both the chassis and adhesive bond to load variations during the route. Relative angular displacement data collection, in real time, was performed using an Arduino microcontroller interconnected to a 5060 MPU gyroscope that was installed in the junction area. The measurement of the angular velocity on the rear axle was performed using a KLH 512 encoder. The maximum values for the angular displacement reached 16° and 17° for the left and right side positions, respectively, of the junction, however, no relative displacements were evident between the shaft and the junction in the axial direction (traction). Overall, it was concluded that the adhesive bond performed well to absorb high energy levels by torsional deformation and high mechanical failure resistance according to the handling variations presented on the track.
