Heteronormativity, LGTBI+ Population and Physical Education: Reflections, Challenges, Proposals

Authors

Abstract

Heteronormativity is the set of traditional ideas, institutions and practices grounded in the sex/gender binary and that privilege men, masculinity and heterosexuality in most social contexts, including schools. Physical Education is one of the subjects that most fosters a hostile and marginalizing environment for LGBTI+ people, due to the dominant heteronormative discourse that is constantly perpetuated in it. Consequently, this paper aims to evidence the available knowledge about homo/trans negative experiences, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors shown in school Physical Education. Suggestions are made to transform the teaching practices of Physical Education teachers, since their role is key to the socialization of students and to create a truly inclusive space for the LGTBI+ population.
