Abstract

Introduction: Sleep is essential for human health, and it is influenced by internal circadian rhythms that can be adjusted by external cues such as light. The ne-matode Caenorhabditis elegans is an invertebrate model that shows similarities to mammalian-sleep patterns. However, excessive light exposure can negatively affect stress induced sleep (SIS). Objective: To eva-luate the effect of blue light (LED) and medium wave UV (UVB) on the survival of C. elegans and compare with the circadian cycle of 12 h white light exposure. Methods: An experiment was carried out using L1 larvae of C. elegans N2 cultured on NGM agar with a food source of E. coli OP50, and subjected to dark-ness, white, LED and UVB Lights in periods of 12 h and 24 h. Results: At the end of the experiment, an increase in mortality due to phototoxicity was evident, demonstrated by a lower survival rate in the larvae ex-posed for 24 h, when compared to the larvae that re-mained in permanent darkness, a natural condition of the parasite. Conclusions: These results show us that the longer the exposure photoperiod, the shorter the survival of C. elegans.
