Abstract

This research is a case study that arises from a personal concern about the urban processes that have shaped the life of my maternal family. It asks about the identification process that the migrant worker of Compañía de Tejidos de Rosellón experiences after arriving in the Aburrá valley in the mid-twentieth century. Taking Envigado’s urban growth as a starting point, It was found that  Christian paternalism was the strategy used by the factory to mold a particular self-referent identity in its  workers. Religion, family and work are recognized as typical identity referents in Antioquia’s popular culture. In this case study, they’re redefined by a new referent, which will shape new ways and life meanings: progress.
