Wilhelm Vallentin in Argentina (1904-1905): colonization projects between local actors and a global trajectory

This article presents new materials on the life of the German explorer Wilhelm Vallentin that reveal his itineraries, encounters and projects in Argentina. Using the explorer’s own travel journals, the German periodical press published in Buenos Aires and various archive materials the article illustrates the dense social network that the German-speaking community had developed in Argentina since the late 19th century. Based on the detailed analysis of a single trajectory, this article shows the potential of biographical writing as a way to understand a specific juncture of global history in its regional and local articulations.
