Abstract

Historically, library buildings have been destined for the inquiry and preservation of bibliographical collections. This paper describes the process of change experimented by these buildings throughout history, which has derived, at the same time, from the transformations in the role of libraries; that is, from the repositories of documents to institutions that are currently cultural references and spaces to socialize. They store great quantity of information, provide services to an ever increasing public, which demands from them a dynamic role in the society.
