Desde 1927 cuando Muller conoció que las radiaciones ionizantes causan cambios en el material genético, se han realizado numerosas investigaciones en todos los niveles utilizando estas radiaciones. En la actualidad tiene capital importancia no sólo en experimentos de genética básica, sino también porque gran parte de la población está expuesta a este tipo de radiaciones, por razones de radioterapia y principalmente por contaminación, en lugares de experimentación con energía nuclear.
