En Colombia, el profesor Cataño ha llevado una vida académica recono-cida a través de la docencia y la investigación alrededor de los temas de la historia del análisis económico y, en especial, sobre el contenido de la teoría económica de Karl Marx. Su método analítico propende por una interpretación heterodoxa de Marx, siguiendo los patrones del enfoque monetario desarrollado en Francia, a través del cual se señalan las fortalezas y debilidades en la construcción de una teoría pura de la economía comercial y capitalista.
