La reactivación económica en el mundo se acelera en el último semestre gracias a la implementación de una vacunación masiva que, de acuerdo conel portal estadístico “Our World in Data”, para julio de 2021 alcanzaba un 29,7% de la población. La tasa de aplicación global diaria es de 40 millones de vacunas. El mundo parece retomar su ritmo y los indicadores de produccióny empleo se acercan a niveles previos al surgimiento de la pandemia, lo que parece ser un panorama bastante alentador. En este número de la revista Lecturas de Economía presentamos un trabajo elaborado por Luis Peñafiel, en el que se investiga cuál era el panorama económico, político y sanitario de América Latina y el Caribe al comienzo de la pandemia, con el objetivo de adquirir una mejor percepción respecto a las condiciones con las que contólaregión para afrontar el primer momento de la misma e identificar cuáles son esos grandes retos que persistirán durante y después de la pandemia.
