El proyecto científico más importante de la teoría económica pura, de enfoque neoclásico, es el de elaborar un modelo racional del proceso económico de la sociedad capitalista, que sirva de base para la reflexión general sobre este proceso y, principalmente, para la explicación de la magnitudes resultantes de las relaciones económicas que se establecen entre las agentes participantes en él. Esta construcción teórica es el Modelo de Equilibrio General.
