There are different ways to read Hopscotch (Rayuela), based on the constellation of the three parts “From This Side”, “From the Other Side” and “From Other Sides”, and they all imply a particular vision of exile. The linear reading of the first two parts gives a bipolar idea of two places that face each other and at the same time can be clearly distinguished. The second way of reading gives up bipolarity and starts to invert the chronology and the unity of space. The places now merge together, the terms of “this side” and “the other side” finally loose validity and sense. In Hopscotch, the displacement in space becomes a metaphor of dissociation and of the impossibility to recover what has been lost.
