This article presents a comparative reading of three Colombian novels from 19th Century:Jorge Isaacs’ María (1867), Soledad Acosta de Samper’suna holandesa en américa (1876, 1888) and Eugenio Díaz’ Manuela. Read together, una holandesa and Manuela show the way they want to build different kinds of women characters and also alternative ways to think the population that inhabits the country it’s geography. If María is defined essentially as the loved one, Acosta’s novel present two women protagonists that are not defined through love, and who look for autonomy. Manuela’s protagonist couple, on the other hand, is made not through love among equals but through an acknowledgement based friendship. The letrado who knows and understands everything, the poet narrator and protagonist of María, is questioned in the other two novels, novels that, in doing so, make room in national literature to the voice of marginalized subjects of foundational projects, traditionally silenced by the letrados
