Rickettsias del grupo tifo en Colombia, estado actual

Las bacterias del género Rickettsia son responsables de enfermedades zoonóticas de importancia a nivel mundial, tal como las fiebres manchadas, el tifo epidémico y el murino (Walker y Dumler, 1994). Estos microorganismos causan cuadros febriles agudos, los cuales pueden llegar a ser fatales si no son tratados oportuna y adecuadamente (Walker y Fishbein, 1991; Walker et al, 1996). Las Rickettsias patógenas del grupo de las fiebres manchadas son transmitidas principalmente por garrapatas. Las Rickettsias del grupo del tifo tienen dos especies: 1) R. prowazekii el agente del tifo epidémico, transmitido por piojos del cuerpo humano y 2) R. typhi agente causal de tifo murino transmitido por pulgas (Walker, 1991).
