Abstract

Economic and social inequality in Latin America represents one of the greatest challenges to the region’s democratic stability, directly affecting social cohesion and trust in institutions. This essay reflects on how these disparities undermine democracy, with particular attention to Colombia, where the lack of equity restricts political participation and deepens social tensions. It also examines the growing role of left-wing movements, which advocate redistributive policies and social justice as pathways to reduce inequality and strengthen a more inclusive democracy. The proposal of a policy that balances the interests of vulnerable and privileged sectors emerges as a possible solution to stabilize the political landscape and foster greater citizen confidence in the democratic system.
