Abstract

In recent years, we have seen the rise and consolidation of authoritarian regimes in various countries, such as those of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Viktor Orbán in Hungary, and Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, which could evolve into closed societies that threaten plurality. Among these, totalitarian regimes, characterized by their homogenizing project, represent the most extreme expression of this phenomenon. Historical examples such as Nazi Germany, Stalinist Soviet Union, and Khmer Rouge Cambodia, along with contemporary cases such as North Korea, have revealed the darkest and most violent side of humanity. Therefore, understanding the political processes that sustain these systems becomes a relevant task. The question then arises: how do these systems manage to perpetuate themselves, and is their collapse possible?
