Foucault and the writing of history: reflections on the uses of genealogy
Keywords:
Michel Foucault, genealogy, history of educationAbstract
Writing genealogies is fashionable among education historians. However, the fact that it is not a simple task is not always taken into account. The relationships between Foucault and historians were ambiguous, to say the least, and his acceptance among them has stirred up resistance and controversy. As in many other instances, it could be said that Foucault is more amply criticized than he is read. A careful study of of two offoucault's works in which he practices the genealogy method is intended: a set of lectures given between 1975 and 1976, called in Spanish Genealogia del racismo ; and the second volume of History of Sexuality. We believe that the analysis of these approximations will provide more clues about what is written in a genealogy, how it is written, questions that guide it and challenges it faces.
