Social exclusion and subjectivity of single mother prostitutes in contexts of marginality

Abstract

This article summarizes the results obtained on the experience of eight women from slums in downtown Bogotá, who have worked in prostitution and are single mothers. The main objective of the study is to analyze social exclusion and subjectivity, in order to establish the influence of characteristics of sex, class and economic activity in their lives and those of their families.

As main findings include the presence of poverty from different fields, becoming a vicious circle in the lives of participants, likewise, identifies a particular family typology reflected in female headship lacking the support of a man and low network social.

With the study explores family relationships and family of the participants, in their experience as mothers in situations of exclusion, as well as his experience in the practice of prostitution, the latter becoming a means of survival for sustaining his family in front of their conditions of exclusion and lack of job opportunities that are accessible. It focuses on the social exclusion experienced as a result of their poverty, the lack of opportunity and social networks and the fight continues as mothers to take their maternity and ensure the maintenance of the family. Furthermore, an analysis is made of the feminization of poverty, the problems arising from the coexistence in marginal areas in big cities and the impact of prostitution in their lives.
