Artificial Intelligence Use Policy
Considering the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academia, Actualidades Biológicas, together with its team and editorial board, has taken the following positions on the use of AI in the works it edits and subsequently publishes:
Authoring of works and artificial intelligence
The journal Actualidades Biológicas expects submissions to be creations of the authors and not of artificial intelligence tools. Therefore, its editorial board does not allow authors to exclusively use artificial intelligence tools, such as large language models (LLMs), chatbots, and image creators, for the creation of the works to be published. AI tools cannot be authors or co-authors of articles, as they do not meet the minimum requirements for authorship of articles. In case the editorial board of Actualidades Biológicas detects that a work was created mostly with AI tools, or that its use was inappropriate, it will be rejected or retracted.
Likewise, it is not allowed to cite works in which an AI is considered the author of the content, since the tool cannot assume responsibility for the information produced and published in the article. If the authors have used AI tools at some point in their writing and presentation process for general queries, translations, text corrections, creation of keywords or search for references, they should detail their use in the methodology section, indicating the tool, the use given to it, the prompt and possible biases or limitations found in the information generated by the AI.
Finally, it is important to mention that authors are responsible for the accuracy of the work and for ensuring that there is no plagiarism. AI should be used as a research and writing support tool, not as a replacement for human authorship. Therefore, authors should be the ones who take responsibility for the research and writing of the paper, even when AI has been employed.
Artificial intelligence image generation
The journal Actualidades Biológicas, for now, prohibits the generation and use of images in its AI-produced works. It is understood that scientific journals recognize that this area is developing rapidly and that our position on AI-generated multimedia elements may change with evolving copyright law and ethical standards.
Peer review and artificial intelligence
Peer review is the central process in scientific journals, in which referees guide the editor in making decisions about the thematic quality of articles. Thus, referees are directly responsible for the suggestions and recommendations they provide to the editor and his editorial team during the review process. As long as there is no IA tool designed for the peer review process, Actualidades Biológicas does not allow peers to use others to review and make the final opinion.
