The alkaloid isolated from Duguetia vallicola leaves: N-methyl laurotetanine1 and its derived, O-methylated 2, O-acetylated 3, in addition to the alkaloids isolated from Xylopia amazonica cf. stem bark: dicentrinone 4 and liriodenine 5 were tested using two antioxidant models: a lipidic peroxidation in an emulsified system of methyl linoleate/β-carotene and the free radical scavenger activity of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazil (DPPH). N-methyl laurotetanine showed a moderate scavenger activity (DPPH) with an IC50 of 90.6 μM compared to the most commonly used commercial antioxidant, butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA) (IC50 = 44.4 μM). The alkaloids dicentrinone, N-methyl laurotetanine and their derived, O-methylated, O-acetylated, showed a good antiperoxidative activity against the methyl linoleate/β-carotene system probably due to the quenching single oxygen activity.
