Desde 1911 T.H. Morgan empezó a utilizar la mosca de las frutas (Drosophila melanogaster) en los estudios de genética. Desde entonces el trabajo de esta, se ha extendido muchísimo y hoy en día se emplea en centenares de laboratorios en todo el mundo.
