Tannins are the phenolic compounds most abundant in nature, used as raw material in several industrial processes like tanning leather. Tannic acid is a hydrolyzable tannin used in tannery, which can be degraded by a biological enzymatic hydrolysis using tannase. To evaluate the capacity and optimal conditions of tannin degradation using microorganisms isolated from a tannery, we used an enrichment technique and plate culture. We obtained the isolation of tannin-resistant bacteria, that were subjected to minimum inhibitory concentration tests (MIC), retaining 0,4% v/v tannic acid. Finally, Bacillus licheniformis was identified as the bacteria with the major capacity of degradation in growth conditions of pH 7, 35 °C and 90 r. p. m.
