Cuando hablamos de abejas, el común de las gentes piensa inmediatamente en aquellos insectos que utilizan los apicultores para cosechar principalmente miel y cera de sus colonias. La abeja melífera de la apicultura, es sólo una de las aproximadamente 20.000 especies diferentes de abejas descritas hasta el presente. Estas especies conforman el taxón (o grupo taxonómico) de los apoideos).
