“Self-punishment” and itineraries of infantile sexuality in paranoid psychosis and its relation to the personality (1932)

This paper is part of doctoral project titled “Pictures of the Child in Lacan (1932-1938)”. It shows how Lacan's reference, in his thesis from 1932, to the development of K. Abraham on the developmental stages of libido was mediated by Lacan's reading and appropriation of many works by the Société Psychanalytique of Paris on self-punishment. It also studies how Lacan used such developments in order to refute the constitutional theories in psychiatry. Finally, it points out how Lacan's references to his French contemporaries' production constitute a relevant and unexplored link for a history of the elaboration of the mirror stage.
