This article addresses the female characters in Waldina Dávila de Ponce de León’s narrative, aiming at analyzing the social construction of womanhood in the nineteenth century throughout her work. The analysis identifies some female characters that accomplish to become subjects of their own lives, shifting away from other representations that reconstruct the literary models of the patriarchal tradition.
