In this essay the problematic of violence in Colombia is explored from the political and literary perspective of Manuel Zapata Olivella. It is argued here that a more complete understanding of his perspective requires revealing the role played by two key; an historical moments that contributed to his intellectual education and development as a thinker, such as, the events occurred on April 9th, 1948 in Bogotá and the transformative experience of his journey on China in 1952.
