Presence of Nature, Transparent Territories and Animality in Cuando aprendí a pensar, by Pilarica Alvear Sanín

This article analyzes the presence of nature in the novel Cuando aprendí a pensar (1962), by Pilarica Alvear Sanín (1942), one of the five Antioquian women writers who published novels in the twentieth century. The purpose is to characterize the hegemonic and non-hegemonic forms of nature, territories and animals that we perceive through the narrative voice of Juanita, a five-year-old girl. The territory is transparent in its anonymity, which, paradoxically, highlights its nature. An animality emerges from the interspecies relationships Juanita engages in with the dog and other non-human animals. Thus, through her work we can configure literary antecedents on the ways in which we have considered nature, which makes her legacy relevant, six decades after publication, in an increasingly critical ecological reality.
