The Colombian novels of Violence (1946-1966) play a key role to understand its historical processes. One of the most representative is El Cristo de espaldas (1952) by Eduardo Caballero Calderón. Through Johan Galtung’s conflict theory, this article examines how the novel reveals that the causes of Violence during this period are not only political, but also rooted in economic issues, such as land ownership, and in internal family conflicts: revenge and the quest for lost honor.
