In this paper the novel "Florencio Conde" (1875) by the Colombian author José María Samper is analyzed. An overview of the work shows how, through it, the author exemplifies what for him would be the ideal democratic and progressive spirit that should have existed in the people and institutions of the republic. For this, Samper uses characters to illustrate liberal values and fictionalizes the historical panorama of olombia in the 1813-1852 period, in which intellectuals were establishing the grounds of the nation.
