En agosto de 2013 el mundo académico recibió con agrado la publicación de la obra El capital en el siglo XXI, del profesor francés Thomas Piketty de la Escuela de Economía de Paris. Esta obra es el resultado de una investigación realizada por el autor y un grupo de más de 30 personas, llevada a cabo entre 1998 y 2013, alrededor del problema de la “dinámica histórica de los ingresos y la riqueza” (p. 9), con un énfasis en el análisis de los casos de Europa y Estados Unidos. A la fecha la obra ha sido objeto de un conjunto de discusiones, las cuales están limitadas esencialmente al alcance de los resultados econométricos y a las propuestas de política económica
