ABSTRACT Based on the approaches proposed by Briz (1998,2002) about mitigation, we intend to explain the use of the passive voice with "se" as a mitigation strategy. Consequently, we say that passive constructions are used as strategies to mitigate the presence of the sender (speaker), hide the responsability and involvement of agents in the facts, or disguise orders and avoid negative reactions from the interlocutors. The passive voice is also used as a politeness strategy to protect the positive face and look after others' face as well.Downloads
