Eugenio Díaz Castro’s Manuela relates encounters and disencounters of a population who tried to be constructed, named and differentiated in the Colombian civilizing project of Mid-19th century, legitimizing in other ways violence in the country. The novel was also attached to a transnational project, by an elite that under the name of “Costumbrismo” registered all the dynamics of the people in order to strengthen the new States/Nation.
