ABSTRACT Through a thirteenth-century novel in prose, the Estoire del Sanit Graal (written between 1230 and 1235), this article proposes an approach between the Desert Fathers and the first heroes of the Grail. It shows the closeness of certain passages of this novel to a hagiographic text as Histoire des Moines d'Egypte, written by Wauchier de Denain before 1210. In this way it is demonstrated how a number of motifs related to the Desert Fathers will be displaced in the novels of the Grail in order to apply those motifs in the hero-ancestors of Arthur's knights rather than in the hermits.
