Elaborar una historia social de la escritura en Colombia es un esfuerzo que debe reconocer las prácticas escriturales como un fenómeno cultural polimórfico. Estas prácticas como objeto de estudio para la historia implican mostrar un panorama muy amplio de tendencias y posibilidades de apropiación de la cultura escrita. El libro Minúscula y plural. Cultura escrita en Colombia, editado por Alfonso Rubio, profesor de la Universidad del Valle y miembro del grupo de investigación Nación-Cultura-Memoria (NCM) de la misma universidad, recoge trece ensayos que buscan desde la historia, la sociología, la archivística, la bibliotecología, la literatura e, incluso,la antropología, hacer una aproximación a la importancia cultural de las prácticas escriturales en Colombia.
