Abstract

The aim of this study is to define apparent impoliteness and explain its working. For that purpose, a literature review about the topic was carried out. An analysis of the use of the apparent impoliteness in two samples of an online chat and in a face-to-face conversation was also carried out. On the basis of an (im)politeness’ conception as a continuum between totally polite and totally impolite behaviour, apparent impoliteness can be defined as the conventionally impolite acts that are not working as expected in a specific situation and create a neutral or polite effect on the other’s face.

Author Biography

Hugo Fernando Lancheros Redondo, European University Viadrina

Master in Spanish Linguistics of the Caro and Cuervo Institute (Colombia). He worked as a professor of Linguistics at the National University of Colombia and the Pontifical Xaverian University (Colombia). He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Cultural Sciences at the European University Viadrina (Germany). The theme of his doctoral thesis is the (im)politeness in chat rooms in German and Spanish.
