This essay returns to the traditional debate about the comparative similarities and differences of the slave regimes developed in the different colonies and nations of the Americas from the 16th to the end of the 19th century. It focuses on what we currently know about the economic and social integration of these afro-Americans into their respective societies and economies and stresses the features that make the Latin American experience different from the Anglo Saxon model.
