Abstract

During the second half of the twentieth century, the term "crisis of foundations" became common in the field of epistemology and much later developments were oriented to understand and to overcome this situation. In some specialized areas, such as recent philosophy of mathematics, this crisis has adopted particular characteristics. On the one hand, some mathematical discoveries have questioned the ideals of certainty that until then have converted this discipline into the object of philosophical admiration; on the other hand, epistemology questioned the validity of foundationalism as a theory of knowledge. This features conditioned the reflection on the nature of mathematical knowledge. This paper rejects Richard Rorty’s attempt to overcome the intellectual background of the late twentieth century. The strategy will be appealing to their inconvenience as a philosophy of mathematics.
