Abstract

This paper develops the generation of the Intelligence from the One, as it appears in Ennead V 1, chapters 6 and 7, following two kinds of metaphors that appear along the text: visual and emanative. As we will intend to show, Plotinus uses in these chapters both kinds of metaphors to distinguish two phases in the generation of Intelligence by the One. The first moment is the procession -radiation or emanation of something undetermined by the One-. The second moment involves contemplative conversion and selfdetermination -the undetermined product turns back towards its beginning, it sees it and reaches its selfconstitution as Intelligence-. These two phases guarantee both the continuity and the difference that should exist between Intelligence -first stage of multiplicity- and the One, which is beyond Intelligence, since it is absolute simplicity.
