Abstract

Problem: the method or technique Pilates exercise has been used to improve functional capacity and prevent possible situations that affect the health of individuals, regardless of age and the activity that develops in everyday life. Objective: to analyze the effect of the Pilates exercise method on muscle strength in healthy people. Method: a review of the literature was made, without restriction of dates, in the databases Pubmed, Scopus, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, GreenFILE, ProQuest and SPORTDiscus. The terms Pilates, Pilates exercise, strength, health, randomized controlled trials were used. Studies were chosen, which met the inclusion criteria. Results: it was selected a quasi-experimental study and 7 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that analyzed the effects of the Pilates method on muscle strength. Conclusions: Pilates exercise method has been used as a means of preventive intervention in population groups with different characteristics and objectives. In some investigations the Pilates method generated changes in the strength; however, there are other studies in which, despite changes, these are not significant, therefore it is possible that the interventions are not being carried out with the required methodological rigor, aspect that should be evaluated in future research.
