Abstract

Cachama blanca Piaractus brachypomus (Cuvier, 1818), is an important species in Colombian fish culture. It has good production rates, a high rusticity, and an excelent palatability. However, this species has a large number of intramuscular bones (IMB) which reduces its use as food. We present radiographic technique for allowing quantification of some bone structures and IMB without killing the animals selected as parentals in a future program for genetic improvement by reducing some osseous characteristics. The quantification of eight osseous variables were obtained by X rays method (44 Kv and 4 mAs) and dissection (post cooking method) on 33 specimens fo this species from 1.341 ± 253 g, obtained from the fish culture station of the University of Antioquia in San Roque (Antioquia), Colombia. Results obtained from two observing methods for each quantified variable were highly significant (p < 0.001) with correlation value of 0.81, 1.00, and 0.93 for IMB, ribsnumber (R), and the number of vertebrae (V), respectively. Magnification evaluation showed that some bones with a curvaceous form like ribs, doral apophysis (DAPO), and ventral apophysis (VAPO) had differences between observing methods. X rays technique is an efficient tool for counting IMB and some other fish osseous structures and it may be used on fish selection in a genetic improvement program of osseous characteristics
