Abstract

This work arises as one of the results of the research called "Function of the Gaze among Orthognathic Surgery Patients", funded by the Committee for the Development of Research–CODI–of the University of Antioquia. Our interest in the field of orthognathic surgery stems from participating in a maxillofacial surgery unit of a hospital in the city of Medellín, Colombia. Since 2005, pre-and post-operative interviews have been carried out with patients of both genders and different age ranges who are in the orthognathic surgery protocol. The aesthetic aspect that these surgeries entail is striking inasmuch as many patients sought the orthognathic procedure inorder to improve their facial aesthetics, either to get a certain aesthetic ideal or to stop being taunted and pointed to because of their aspect. Psychoanalysis offers a theoretical and clinical field where these phenomena concerning image and gaze can be thought.
