Abstract

Joan Gonzàlez, director of the DocsBarcelona Festival, has been promoting, on both sides of the Atlantic, a process of dissemination and training in documentary filmmaking. He has faced many battles over the last 20 years, and the conditions of the industry in Barcelona at that time are not very different from those we are living today in Latin America. However, his experience and the vision he has of the possibilities of documentary filmmaking in the continent are revealing for both trainers and Latin American filmmakers. The DocsBarcelona Festival brings together spaces that are not limited to Europe, but have transcended borders through its editions in Valparaíso and Medellín. On the occasion of the first DocsBarcelona Campus in May 2019, we had the opportunity to talk to Joan and learn about his perception of the documentary industry and the work ahead to make it sustainable.
